Crosses

My first experience combining art, spirit and ritual was making white crosses with my brother Jon to mark the graves of our dead pets. In recent years I’ve been obsessed with the cross shape and the myriad meanings of cross: “light of the great fire” (as in rubbing two sticks together), great suffering (as in crucifixion), life and healing (as in the Egyptian ankh), conjunction (as in joining horizontal and vertical, heaven and earth). The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols. Sometimes we’re at a crossroads, sometimes we’re ready to cross over, and sometimes that cross is just too hard to bear.
